1.4. Oversight and monitoring of drone operations


All high-risk activities in a company should be monitored by independent functions. Basic segregation of duties needs to be in place to ensure that non-performant or non-compliant entities are identified timely and corrective actions can be taken.

Drone operations in many companies are relatively new and their integration into a companies overall framework of checks and balances is frequently lagging behind.

It is the responsibility of senior management to ensure that a system is in place that ensures that they become aware of problems early on and get the opportunity to take corrective actions.


  • Late discovery of irregularities and non-compliance issues in drone operations lead to preventable accidents.
  • Lack of organizational preparedness leads to legal exposure of responsible managers, fines and service interruptions.
  • Lack of cross-functional coordination leads to lost synergies and lower efficiency of drone operations.

Audit Steps

  • Catalog where in the company drones are used and for what purpose.
  • Assess the awareness of corporate compliance functions in regards to legal requirements related to drones.
  • Establish who is responsible to ensure that only qualified pilots are allowed to pilot drones. This is of key importance, since unqualified operators are likely unaware of basic safety rules and legal operating limitations.
  • Review the availability of incident and near-accident reports involving drones and the distribution list of such reports.
  • Review the role of operational health and safety functions in drone operations if any.
  • Review past audit reports from health and safety functions and verify that drone related observations have been addressed.
    Review the role of the legal function in drone operations if any.
    Review the role of HR and training departments in drone operations if any.
